Using Internal Quality Assurance to Enhance University Performance

University leaders interested in the sustained long-term performance of their institutions-- particularly along key dimensions like teaching and learning, management and employability-- may want to review the findings of the survey conducted by the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP). The study launched in 2014 aimed at exploring international trends, innovative practices and good principles for Internal Quality Assurance (IQA). It also sought to demonstrate the effects of IQA on the effective functioning of universities and provide guidance to institutions for the development of their own IQA.

The conclusions of the research project that involved 311 higher education institutions, include the importance of integrating quantitative and qualitative tools for IQA, the need to balance academic- and employability-related IQA tools, and the criticality of fomenting an evidence-based culture for the success of IQA.
