Back to Basics: AI Is a Misnomer*

The term has done its damage. It is time to say plainly what these systems are — and what they are not.
What we call artificial intelligence is not intelligent. It is a prediction engine — technically formidable, practically useful, and entirely devoid of the one thing its false name implies. And the mislabeling is not trivial. It has deliberately delivered from the top down, and it has shaped how institutions govern these systems, how educators frame them for students, and how society distributes responsibility for their failures.
The term was coined at the Dartmouth Conference of 1956 mostly as an aspiration: a name for what researchers hoped to build, not for what they had. What they had was mathematics. What we have today is an enormously more powerful version of the same thing: systems that estimate the next word, label, or decision based on statistical patterns extracted from prior data. The aspiration became branding, and the branding stuck, like every so often in this age of confusion. And the confusion it produced has compounded ever since.
What these systems actually do
A large language model does not understand language. It computes probabilities across enormous corpora of text and returns the statistically plausible continuation of a sequence. An image recognition system does not see; it detects regularities in labeled pixel arrays. A recommendation engine does not know what you want; it extrapolates from behavioral correlations in a training set. Scale makes these systems fluent and sometimes amazingly accurate. However, it does not make them aware, intentional, or capable of grasping what any of it means.
Let's use an analogy to clarify this: a calculator outperforms every human at arithmetic without understanding numbers at all. Today's prediction systems outperform humans at pattern recognition — across text, images, game states, and molecular structures — without understanding any of it. The performance is real, but the comprehension is entirely nonexistent.
This is not a limitation waiting to be engineered away, even though Altman may dream it's possible. It is a structural property of what these systems are built to do. They optimize. They just cannot deliberate.
The one thing they cannot do
Judgment is not the same as prediction. The distinction is worth insisting on, because it is the one most routinely collapsed in public discourse about AI.
Prediction is inference from prior data to probable outcome. Judgment is the capacity to act under genuine uncertainty, that is, when data is incomplete, when values conflict, and when the situation is novel enough that no prior pattern cleanly applies. Judgment involves deciding not only how to pursue an objective, but whether the objective is worth pursuing. It involves asking whether the framing of a problem is itself distorted. Prediction systems cannot do any of this. They optimize what they are given, but they do not interrogate it.
Every output an AI system produces is bounded by prior human choices: what data was collected, what objective function was defined, what trade-offs were encoded, what was left out. The intelligence, insofar as the word means anything here, resides in those design choices. The model executes them. When the design is flawed — and it frequently is — the model executes the flaw at scale, reliably and without "conscious" remorse.

This is the danger that warrants serious attention: not runaway superintelligence, but institutional over-trust. The moment an output is treated as authoritative simply because a system produced it, the bias embedded in the training data is laundered as objectivity, the flaw in the objective function becomes policy, and the human who should have questioned both has already stepped aside.
What universities are getting wrong
Universities are, by charter and tradition, in the business of correcting exactly this kind of confusion. They exist to sharpen distinctions, interrogate assumptions, and teach students to develop judgement resisting the persuasive-sounding nonsense that's all around. On this particular confusion, most are failing dramatically.
The dominant institutional response to AI has been to frame it as a competitive threat: something students must not fall behind, something faculty must incorporate, and something administrators must have a strategy for. What is almost entirely absent from that framing is the prior and more important question: what is this thing, actually, and on what basis should anyone trust its outputs?
Teaching students to use AI tools without teaching them to interrogate AI outputs is not education. It is vocational conditioning for a world that will hold them accountable for decisions they made on the basis of systems they never understood. The student who learns to prompt fluently but cannot evaluate whether the result is reliable, biased, or simply wrong has acquired a liability, not a skill.
What education actually owes students
The objective is not to prepare students to compete with machines at prediction. Machines already won that contest and will keep winning it across an expanding range of domains. Racing them is not a strategy; it is a misreading of what education is for.
What machines cannot do is the thing education has always been for: to develop in students the capacity to reason under uncertainty, to interpret meaning rather than merely process pattern, and to assume responsibility for consequential decisions. None of that can be automated, not because the engineering is not there yet, but because accountability is essentially human. A system cannot be held responsible. Only a person can.
This means the curriculum response to AI is not primarily technical, though technical literacy matters. Students need to understand probability, algorithms, and data structures; but that is the floor, not the ceiling. Above it, they need epistemology to distinguish correlation from causation and to know when a statistical association tells them something real and when it tells them nothing. They need ethics to interrogate the values embedded in training data and objective functions. They need philosophy of mind, not to resolve the hard problem of consciousness, but to be precise about what understanding actually requires, so they can discern when a system has produced something that looks like understanding and is not.
The practical questions this generates are not exotic. They are the questions every professional who uses these tools should be asking every time: When is a prediction reliable? When is it a confident-sounding extrapolation from a distribution that does not match this case? When does the training data reflect the world as it is, and when does it reflect the world as it was, or as particular choices made it appear? When should a machine output be treated as a starting point, and when should it be treated as noise?
These are not technical questions. They are judgment questions and require precisely the capacities that prediction systems lack and that education, at its best, is supposed to build.
The terminological problem is a governance problem
Calling these systems intelligent is not merely imprecise. It is a governance failure waiting to happen.
When a system is framed as intelligent, its outputs carry an implicit warrant they have not earned. Auditors defer to it. Administrators base decisions on it. Courts are asked to assess its recommendations. The bias in the training data, the arbitrariness of the objective function, the unmeasured effects of what was left out of the dataset — all of this recedes behind the authority conferred by the name. The humans who should be accountable for those choices become harder to identify and easier to excuse.
Precise language is not pedantry. In this case it is a prerequisite for assigning responsibility correctly, which is to say, for governance that works.
What we have are prediction systems. They are powerful, useful, and in many domains transformative. They are also incapable of the one thing their name implies. That incapacity does not diminish them as tools. It simply defines the terms on which they should be used and the limits beyond which human judgment must not defer to them.
The responsibility of higher education is not to chase the illusion of machine intelligence. It is to produce graduates who are not fooled by it — who can use prediction systems with precision, interrogate their outputs without deference, and retain the judgment that no optimization function will ever replace.
That has always been what education is for. AI has not changed the destination. It has sharpened the urgency of getting there.
